Phoenix Mercury at Chicago Sky

  • Leg 1: Phoenix Mercury -3 (-112)
  • Leg 2: Over 165.5 Total Points (-110)
  • Leg 3: Brittney Griner Over 25.5 Points + Rebounds (-125)

The Mercury (13-12) travel to meet the Sky (10-14) at Wintrust Arena. This is the first meeting between Gold Medalist Brittney Griner and rookie Angel Reese. The Sky has dominated this series, winning seven of the past eight straight up since Oct. 15, 2021, while Chicago is 6-2 against the spread (ATS) in the span, too. The defense has reigned supreme too with the Under cashing in seven of the previous eight meetings.

When we last saw the Mercury, they pushed their record above .500 with a 96-87 win over the Washington Mystics, covering as 4.5-point favorites as the Over (168.5) cashed. Phoenix is a healthy 4-2 SU/ATS in the past six games while cashing high on the total in four in a row, and five of the past six.

Griner was on an absolute tear prior to the break, going for 21 or more points in four of her seven games in July, while snagging seven or more boards in four of the previous six. Additionally, she was her usual disruptive self on the defensive end, swatting nine shots, or 1.5 blocked shots per game, in the previous six outings. Griner is a solid play in the player combo props for Over 25.5 Points + Rebounds.

In addition, let’s simply roll with the Mercury, who were going well before the hiatus, and we’ll go high on the total. The latter is a little concerning, as we could have some rust on both sides, as these teams get their sea legs, but they should acclimate rather quickly, and most everybody will have fresh legs. The Over cashed in the final four games for Phoenix prior to the break, while the total went high in two of the final three games for the Sky. The Over has a slight 3-2 edge for the Sky in the past five games against Western Conference foes, too.

New York Liberty at Los Angeles Sparks

  • Leg 1: Los Angeles Sparks +11 (-110)
  • Leg 2: Over 164.5 Total Points (-108)
  • Leg 3: Rickea Jackson To Score 10+ Points (-250)
  • Leg 4: Jonquel Jones Over 27.5 Points + Rebounds + Assists (-138)

As far as the nationally televised game is concerned, the Liberty (21-4) look to pick up right where they left off before the break. New York had the best record in the WNBA, 2.5 games clear of the Connecticut Sun. While the Liberty are 12-1 SU at home, they’re 9-3 on the road. So, if you’re going to upend them, it is likely going to be away from home.

The Liberty are averaging 85.8 PPG while allowing just 76.8 PPG, and it’s no surprise that the +9.0 point differential is also the best in the W. New York also enters the unofficial 2nd half as the hottest team with four consecutive victories.

The Sparks (6-18) had a brutal 1st half of the season, and to make matters worse, they lost rookie Cameron Brink to a torn ACL after a promising start. While L.A. has managed just six wins in 24 tries, it is a respectable 3-2 ATS in the past five games, and that includes a 98-93 OT win over the Las Vegas Aces on July 5 as a 13-point underdog, showing this team can be dangerous when it’s on one.

The problem with Los Angeles is that they are highly erratic. This team has scored 83 or more points in three of the past five outings, but it has scored 80 or fewer points in four of the past seven. Along with inconsistent offense, the defense has also been downright bad. This team has allowed 81 or more points in nine straight.

These teams have met twice this season, with New York winning both by 10 or more points, good for an average of 11.5 points per game. The Sparks have covered each game as a 14.5-point ‘dog. In fact, L.A. is a perfect 6-0 ATS in the past six meetings and 8-1 ATS across the past nine in the series.

On the flip side, while the Lib covered the final four games before the break, all of those games were as a single-digit favorite. New York is 0-5 ATS in the past five as a double-digit favorite, including two non-covers against the Sparks, while going 1-11 ATS in 12 games this season when favored by double digits.

As far as the player props are concerned, we’ll keep it simple. We’re looking for an Over result, as the Liberty can pile up the points, and the Sparks allow them at a feverish pace. Look for New York’s Jonquel Jones to go Over 27.5 P+R+A as she is averaging 18.0 PPG, 10.0 RPG, and 6.5 APG in two meetings with the Sparks this season.

In addition, Sparks rookie Rickea Jackson is a good bet to get to double digits in points. She averaged 19.5 PPG in the two games prior to the break, and she has gone for double digits in six of her past seven outings. There is some risk, as she averaged just 6.5 PPG in the previous two meetings with the Lib.
