Taylor can prove the doubters wrong in Wolverhampton

Phil Taylor has been playing superb darts and getting little reward of late, but that is set to change and he should get his hands on some silverware again at the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton.

The Power may have been exiting tournaments earlier than he would like of late, but there has been nothing wrong with how he has been playing. His recent loss at the Masters was a prime example of this as he averaged 104.6 in semi-final defeat to James Wade, and that was with the Edinburgh crowd heavily on his back.

In three of his last four losses, Taylor has averaged over 100, which has to be filed under unlucky when you look back at it.

A quartet of competitions without an appearance in the final is pretty much unheard of for Taylor and he will be desperate to turn this around. His level of performance is not going to drop off and he cannot keep running into people who are playing out of their skin as he has been doing.

As opening groups go, Taylor’s is pretty straight forward as he takes on an out of form Andy Hamilton, unpredictable Christian Kist and out of his depth Richie George. There should be no worries for him there and he should have built up some decent momentum ahead of the knockout stages.

The 16-time world champion may not have the fear factor that he once possessed over his rivals, but he can still perform as well as any of them on his day. This is especially true in tournaments he has shown a serious liking for over the years, as he has proved at the Matchplay just a few months ago.

He has won the Grand Slam times before, including 12 months ago when he saw off Gary Anderson, James Wade and Adrian Lewis en route to the title; no mean feat. If his luck turns ever so slightly then he will get his hands on the trophy yet again on 16 November and he looks great value at 11/4 to do so.
