The 2023 Leagues Cup semi-finals get underway on Tuesday, with Lionel Messi looking to win a trophy with Inter Miami quicker than even he could have imagined. The 2022 World Cup winner will lead his new team, statistically the worst team in MLS this year, into their last-four clash at Philadelphia Union after scoring eight goals in his first five matches for the Florida side.

How many trophies has Messi won in his career?

During his career, Messi has won 42 trophies (43 if you count the 2005 Spanish Super Cup, which he didn’t play in even though he was part of Barcelona’s first-team squad by that point) and competed in 41 finals on the way to becoming Barça’s greatest ever player and an Argentina legend, cemented, of course, by the 2022 World Cup victory in Qatar.

Inter Miami face tough test in Philadelphia

Now, Messi is on the verge of his first final in the United States, having made the move to North America only a matter of weeks ago. Inter Miami are, however, expected to face their toughest challenge of the Leagues Cup so far against the Union, who won the MLS’ Eastern Conference in 2022 and lost to LAFC on penalties in the MLS Cup final. Jim Curtin’s side were also beaten by the same opponents in the semi-finals of this year’s Concacaf Champions League.

The former PSG playmaker will therefore have to be on top of his game at Subaru Park, with the experience of ex-Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba also likely to be crucial as David Beckham’s side look to make it to their first ever final and themselves secure a spot in the next edition of the new Concachampions.
